Red wool burnoose, or caftan, with silk lining and black Arabic lettering. A burnoose is a traditional hooded cloak worn by men in many Arabic cultures and across northern Africa. It is designed to protect the wearer from both the extreme sun, wind and sand in the desert and is usually made from a fine wool and often embroidered with decoration. There are two of these garments in the museum’s permanent collection, very likely acquired by Elisabet and Edmund on their trip to Egypt. There is an entry written by Edmund in their shared travel journal describing the purchase of two garments in a market in Cairo, “my passion for oriental stuffs was partly satisfied by two handsome gold woven specimens of Syrian shawls.”
