Title

General Albert Sidney Johnston (1803-1862), reclining, plaster, 1903-1904

Subject

Gallery Two, Texas Gallery

Description

The State of Texas commissioned Ney to create a monumental statuary piece of Albert Sidney Johnston for the Texas State Cemetery. The plan came about as early as the 1890s, but was not commissioned until 1901, and was fraught with difficulties. This model was donated to the museum in the 1920s by the Texas Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, who had painted the original white plaster to look like bronze. The bust was a study for the final piece. Family members of Johnson sent the General's uniform sleeves to Ney to study for the sculpture, and these original uniform sleeves are kept in the museum's archives.
